Habitat: 

Spanning the Americas from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, hummingbirds inhabit a vast array of environments, including tropical rainforests, deserts, and high-altitude mountains. Their habitat choices are influenced by the availability of nectar-producing flowers, their primary food source. They favor areas offering both open spaces for foraging and dense vegetation for nesting, often near water bodies for hydration and bathing. During the breeding season, they utilize materials like plant fibers and spider webs to craft nests in locations ranging from branches to building eaves. Their adaptability to diverse habitats not only ensures their ecological success but also underpins their pivotal role in pollination across ecosystems.

Behaviours:

1. Hovering: One of the most remarkable behaviours of the hummingbird is its ability to hover in mid-air. With their rapid wing beats, hummingbirds can remain stationary while sipping nectar from flowers, allowing them to access nectar from deep-throated blooms that other birds cannot reach.
2. Nectar Feeding: Hummingbirds primarily feed on nectar from flowers. Their specialized long, slender bills and extendable tongues are perfectly adapted for extracting nectar. They can consume up to twice their body weight in nectar each day, relying on this high-energy food source to fuel their fast metabolism.
3. Aggressive Defense: Despite their small size, hummingbirds can be fiercely territorial. Males, in particular, aggressively defend their feeding territories from intruders, including other hummingbirds and even larger birds. They may engage in aerial chases and vocal displays to protect their valuable food sources.
4. Courtship Displays: During the breeding season, male hummingbirds perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females. These displays often involve intricate aerial dances, swoops, and dives, showcasing the male's vibrant plumage and agility.
5. Torpor: To conserve energy during cold nights or periods of food scarcity, hummingbirds can enter a state of torpor. In torpor, the bird's metabolic rate significantly drops, reducing its energy expenditure and enabling it to survive through the night or unfavourable conditions.
